Join DaVinci Institute and Evan O’Leary as he discusses constructor theory, a new theory of fundamental physics with enough reach to solve ancient problems in philosophy. It is physics looked at from the perspective of computer science. Past theories of physics have conceived of physical laws as describing how initial conditions evolve according to laws of motion. Constructor theory describes which transformations laws of physics allow to be be performed accurately and reliably.
Of surprising importance in constructor theory are emergent-level laws: those that govern phenomena which can be described in terms of themselves, without referring to underlying substrates. This allows it to describe phenomena such as information, thermodynamics, life, evolution, morality, and epistemology (the growth of knowledge). These ideas could conceivably shape the field of artificial intelligence at the most fundamental level.”

Evan O’Leary is a student at CU Boulder who is interested in the application of constructor theory to fields like artificial intelligence, ethics and epistemology. He is also interested in biohacking, founded the Transhumanist Club at CU Boulder, and is involved with the Effective Altruism Community.
